Who created this course
Hugo De Moura
EPFL student
My name is Hugo. I'm 21, I study at EPFL, and I learned to invest on my own. By trying. By losing. By winning. By getting fooled too, like everyone else.
For a few years now, I keep hearing the same thing from people around me, whatever their age: "I know I should invest, but I have no idea where to start and I'm scared of making a dumb mistake." Everyone knows that leaving money in a 2% savings account for 30 years means losing purchasing power. But between that and "putting €10,000 into a World ETF" lies a gap nobody ever taught us how to cross.
Capitalys is the course I wish I had before I started. Understanding how inflation quietly eats away at savings. Why a well-funded tax-wrapped account can double the final capital. Why a World ETF at 0.07% in fees beats almost every fund your bank wants to sell you. Why trying to time the market ruins more people than anything else.
My teaching approach
Three things matter to me in this course.
Every concept is backed by a real number, a simulation, an actual use case. None of this "diversify your portfolio" without showing you how, with which ETFs, at what cost, in which tax wrapper.
This course doesn't sell you a dream. Crashes are explained, potential losses are quantified, psychological pitfalls are called out. Investing also means accepting that you'll sometimes lose. Better to know that before starting.
No commercial ties with any platform I mention. No commissions. When I recommend an ETF or a broker, it's because they're objectively good: low fees, proper regulation, an interface that doesn't lose you. Not because they pay me.
What I am not
I'm not a registered financial advisor, nor a regulated wealth manager. This course is strictly educational. For any personalised decision (inheritance, expatriation, complex wealth), go see a licensed professional in your country.
This isn't a limitation, it's just honesty. The course teaches you to think for yourself, not to outsource your thinking. That's what most people actually need.
My core beliefs
- Investing isn't just for the rich. With €50 a month and 30 years ahead, you build real capital. The wall isn't financial, it's educational.
- Tax wrappers are the most underrated lever. Picking the right one (PEA, Pillar 3a, ISA depending on where you live) can double your final capital over 30 years. It's free, it's legal, and almost nobody does it right.
- The investor's worst enemy is themselves. Not the markets, not the crashes, not the fees. You. Psychology drives a huge part of the 30-year outcome. That's why Module 13 exists.
- Starting imperfectly beats waiting for perfection. A poorly-optimised tax wrapper beats a perfectly-managed savings account by miles. Don't procrastinate because you haven't figured everything out yet.
